CCJBL Week One, 2017

THIS WEEK IN CCJBL BASEBALL!!!

Hey, it was a super opening week in Carroll County baseball! Let's get right down to it!

Monday, May 29

Chadwick Silver Streaks @ Savanna Indians, Old Mill Park

A fine pitching matchup between Chadwick's Chuck Root and Savanna's Greg Maddux. Frankie Lindor is left stranded by Maddux after a one-out double in the first. Mike Kingery suffers the same fate after doubling to lead off the bottom of the frame against Root. The scoreless tie does not last long, however, because Juan Samuel triples to lead off the bottom of the second for The Streaks and scores a batter later on a ground out  by Reggie Sanders. Root then locks up the Indians batters for the next three innings, never allowing a runner past first base. The Streaks lead increases to 2-0 when scrappy Kirk Gibson drives one over the chain link! Savanna does not seriously threaten until a two out triple by Mickey Mantle in the bottom of the sixth. He is unfortunately stranded there when catcher Benito Santiago grounds out 5 to 3.

Lanark Beavers @ Milledgeville Missiles, Milledgeville High School

This contest featured the Beavers' Jay "Dizzy" Dean against fellow hurler Hilton Smith of Milledgeville. The scoring gets started quickly in this one, when Lanark's rotund leadoff hitter Tony Gwynn singled and later scored on a bases-loaded base knock SS John Ward. The Beavers struck again in the second inning when catcher Christopher Iannetta led off with a ringing double and was driven in one batter later on a single by tiny hustler Cooper Pauley. Sadly Smith continued to struggle on the mound for The Missiles and was relieved with two outs in the third and two men on base by the crafty, likeable lefty Fernando Valenzuela. Fernando mystified the Beavers from that point on, allowing only one single.

Meanwhile the quirky Dean was busy mystifying opposing batters himself. He gave up a walk in the third frame and a single and walk in the fifth but entered the sixth leading 2-0. Another walk to and steal by speedy Rickey Henderson in that final inning earned him the hook in favor of slender lefty David Price.Dixie Walker promptly singled home Henderson, scowling the entire times. Martin Dihigo, 0-2 in his CCJBL debut up to that point, Drove a Price fastball into the MHS parking lot for a walk-off 3-2 victory!

Shannon Eagles @ Mt. Carroll Hawks, Point Rock Park

Things got going quickly in this game when the Eagles leadoff man Joyner White drew a walk against Charles Radbourn, swiped second base and scored on a Roberto Clemente line single. Not to be outdone Mt. Carroll fired back in the bottom of the first against beanpole hurler Leroy Paige. All three tallies came courtesy of a Austin Jackson dinger that drove home "Mookie" Betts and Mikey Moustakas! Shannon was not prepared to give up yet and scored two in the top of the second off of Radbourn, Clemente provided the big bat again with another single, this time scoring White and youngster Billy Johnson.

The next scoring strike came against Shannon reliever Kenny DeNunez, who had come in to pitch in the bottom of the third. Betts had the big bat this time, tripling in Willie Wells for a 4-3 lead. Radbourn's ineffectiveness continued into the fourth, unfortunately for his Hawks. White again singled and took second and was driven in by yet another RBI single from Clemente. Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh tried to limit the damage in relief but did allow two more runs to score before the inning was out. DeNunez and LaLoosh were impressive from here on, neither allowing another hit.

Savanna Indians @ Mt. Carroll Hawks, Point Rock Park

Johnny Vander Meer gets off to a rough start on the hill for the Hawks when a Pee Wee Reese two-out double scores Michael Kingery to give Savanna an early lead. Mt. Carroll strikes back in the bottom of the inning on run-scoring doubles by two Mike's, Trout and Moustakas. Things get worse for Vander Meer in the second, however, when he is tagged for five soul crushing runs before dejectedly leaving the game in favor of "Nuke" LaLoosh. The big blows in that fateful second coming on Frankie Frisch two-run double and a huge homer by Hector Espino that travelled over the fence (and the road) and scored three.

The wind seemed to go out of the sails for the youngsters from Mt. Carroll after Espino's blast and they never scored again in the contest. Savanna added one more for good measure off of Laloosh in the sixth when young slugger Mickey Mantle doubled home Kingery.

Final Score: Savanna 7, Mt. Carroll 2

Shannon Eagles @ Milledgeville Missiles, Milledgeville High School

Shannon first baseman Adrian Gonzalez gets things started against Missiles hurler Raymond Brown with a double scoring on-base machine Joyner White in the first half of the first. Milledgeville answers quickly in the bottom of the inning by scoring once off of Kenny DeNunez, courtesy off a Martin Dihigo double plating Dixie Walker. After a 1-2-3 inning in the second Brown runs into trouble against the Eagles bats in the third again. White, yes, that kid again, singles with one out and moves to second on a Clemente walk, Hornsby drives home White with a base hit and Clemente scores on a Gonzales single before Brown can escape.

But the Milledgeville kids never say die! Walker may have a personality like sandpaper, but his swing is sweet as he cranks a two-run shot off DeNunez to tie things up in the second. Shannon proves more resilient in the end unfortunately, when they takes the lead for good in the top of the fourth off of relief lefty Valenzuela. "Rabbit" Maranville scampers around the bases for an inside-the-park solo home run to lead off the frame and Clemente flashes his big bat yet again this week when he cranks a monster home run later in the same inning.

Larry French hurls two scoreless in relief of DeNunez and Paige, who has acquired a strange nickname, "Satchel", mows down the Missile batters in the sixth for the save.

Chadwick Silver Streaks @ Lanark Beavers, Eastland High School

I love a good old fashioned pitching duel!!! It looks like anything but when Beavers starting pitcher Chuck Finley loads the bases in the first allowing a single and two walks. He gets out of the jam when speedster Vince Coleman grounds into an inning-ending  fielders choice. Chadwick hurler Jared Weaver also flirts with danger in the bottom of the inning but escapes also. From then on the two 11-year-old newcomers to the CCJBL perform like seasoned veterans! They both go five innings without either allowing a single run to cross the dish. "Dizzy" Dean relieves Finley and Steve Karsay does the same for Weaver but still, nada!

Nobody scores until the Silver Streaks get one off of Dean in the top of the ninth on back-to-back-to-back singles by Kirk Gibson, Coleman, and Tommy Leach. The crafty lefty Karsay finds himself in some trouble in the bottom of the ninth when John Ward singles with one out, swipes second base, and scores when Billy Jacobsen lines safely to the outfield. With the score now knotted up, Jacobsen takes second via thievery but watches as "Pinky" Higgins flies out to right for the second out of the frame. That brings to the plate Cooper Pauley, who started at catcher and is now playing second for The Beavers. He hits a seemingly easy comebacker to Karsay but the young mound hurler loses concentration and sails the throw to first over Juan Samuel's head, allowing Jacobsen to score the winning run from second base!

Final Score: Lanark 2, Chadwick 1
