Week 2, 2019 CCJBL

This week in CCJBL Baseball!!!

June 3, 2019

Chadwick Silver Streaks @ Milledgeville Missiles, Milledgeville High School

Matt Williams wasted no time getting Chadwick on the scoreboard when he slammed a solo shot off of Todd Worrell in the opening frame. The Streaks scored again in the second on a John Berardino base knock.

Worrell and reliever Davey Boswell held the Streaks lineup in check after that and the Missiles evened the score with two in the bottom of the fifth. The score remained deadlocked until the top of the eighth when Boswell and Bobby Johnson allowed a pair of tallies on an Eric Davis single and a Williams sacrifice fly.

But the scrappy Missiles were not dead  yet! Joey Votto led off the bottom of the 8th with a solo shot against Chad Ogea to cut the score to 4-3. Then with two outs Timmy Federowicz doubled to put the tying run in scoring position. Freddy Lindstrom reached on an infield single to put runners on first and third. But Ogea managed to escape the jam, however, inducing a harmless pop up to short from Harry Craft.

On a side note, I learned today that Johnny Berardino is also a very accomplished actor when he is not playing ball! What a talented young man!

Lanark Beavers @ Mt. Carroll Hawks, Point Rock Park

Chucky Knoblauch got the party started on the games first delivery from the Hawks Josh Smith, parking one into the stream beyond the center field fence! Mt. Carroll answered back immediately with three in their half of the first, highlighted by a two-run dinger by the powerful youngster Reggie Jackson!

The home squad pushed a run across the plate in the third off of starter Amos Rusie and another in the fourth when Willie Wells launched a tater against Dallas Keuchel. They had a seemingly comfortable 5-1 lead.

But the Beavers fought back. Reigning MVP Moises Alou doubled home a run and then scored on a Rick Ankiel single in the fifth. Frank Chance then plated Eric McNair with another single in the sixth against Ricky Vaughn. The Hawks ace was in big trouble with the tying run on third and the winning on first and only one out! But he dug deep and retired the next two batters to secure the victory!

Savanna Indians @ Shannon Eagles, Lions Park

Pitching ruled the day at Lions Park! The Eagles Eddie Cicotte and Savanna's Robin Roberts each went six strong innings allowing only one run each. Claude Jonnard took over for Roberts and Michael Lorenzen for Cicotte. Both continued to shut down their opponents sticks in extras until the bottom of the ninth. Jonnard gave up a leadoff single to speedster Billy Hamilton, who promptly and predictably stole second base. It looked like Claude might escape the inning after striking out Shawon Dunston and the very dangerous Roy Hobbs. But Gary "Kid" Carter drove a two out single into left to score Hamilton and give Shannon a walk-off victory!

Final score: Shannon 2, Savanna 1

Chadwick Silver Streaks @ Savanna Indians, Old Mill Park

Not a great day to be a pitcher at scenic Old Mill Park. The Streaks scored twice off of Frankie Viola in the opening frame. Savanna quickly evened the score with two runs of their own versus Chad Ogea, highlighted by a Willie Hayes homer.

Viola struggled to get outs in the second, also. Matt Williams dealt the big blow with a three run dinger. Young Matt is making a strong early MVP case!

It looked like a potential blowout by the Chadwickians but the Indians scratched back with a run in the third on a Brad Ausmus double and two more in the fifth against Ryan Tepera to tie the contest at five.

The score remained knotted until the top of the eighth. Savanna unfortunately ran out of eligible pitchers after seven innings. Robin Roberts had thrown six innings in the first game of the week and 5th, 6th, and 7th on this one, reaching his maximum of nine for the week. Viola and Claude Jonnard had already been used earlier in the game leaving position player Cliff Floyd as the hurler on the mound for the eighth. Predictably Chadwick took advantage of his inexperience scoring twice on doubles by Luis Gonzalez and King Kelly. Jesse Haines hurled a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth to secure the victory for the Streaks.

Final Score: Chadwick 7, Savanna 5

Lanark Beavers @ Milledgeville Missiles, Milledgeville H.S.

Milledgeville jumped out to an early lead against Lanark starter Billy Lee when Max Carey and Martin Dihigo went back-to-back to lead off the bottom of the first! Beavers slugger Moises Alou tied things up with a two-run double in the third off of a Billy Johnson curve. Cliff Mapes then drove Alou home against reliever Todd Worrell for a 3-2 Lanark lead.

Missile rightfielder Cody Bellinger tied things up again with a solo shot off of Lee in the bottom of the third frame. But Lanark again grabbed the lead in the fourth when Joe Tinker took Worrell deep!

Tinker's tater proved to be the deciding blow. Lanark's Amos Rusie threw three scoreless innings in relief of Lee to cement the victory for the Beavers.

Final score: Lanark 4, Milledgeville 3

Shannon Eagles @ Mt. Carroll Hawks, Point Rock Park

This one was all about Hawks ace hurler Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn! He was anything but wild as he tossed a complete game shutout, spreading around seven singles and striking out three Hawks!

His battery mate Ian Thomas not only called a great game for Vaughn, he also knocked in two of Mt. Carroll's four runs. Frank Baker accounted for the other two RBI with a fourth inning triple.

Final score: Mt. Carroll 4, Shannon 0
