Week One CCJBL, 2018

 THIS WEEK IN CCJBL BASEBALL!!!

Hey! We are back for another exciting season of Carroll County baseball! Let's get started!

Monday, May 28

Milledgeville Missiles vs. Chadwick Silver Streaks, Handel Park

A great pitching matchup between the Missiles Fernando Valenzuela and The Streaks ace Jered Weaver. Chadwick's Matt Williams introduced himself to the league with a two-run dinger in his first ever at bat to stake Weaver to an early lead from then on it was basically pitching domination. no runs were scored until Weaver ran into trouble in the top of the sixth and final frame. Scrappy little Tanner Boyle earned a free pass to lead off the frame and then Rickey Henderson doubled to put runners on second and third with one gone. Max Carey then tied the game with a single that plated both Boyle and Henderson. Joey Votto single to put boys on the corners but Weaver rallied to retire Freddie Lindstrom and Timothy Federowicz and end the threat.

Robbie Johnson took over on the bump for Milledgeville in the bottom of the sixth Ed Robinson reached on a sharp liner with one out. After Albert Almora flew out to deep center, catcher Brady Kness launched a Johnson fastball into an outfield gap to score Robinson and win the game in a walk-off!

Mount Carroll Hawks vs. Lanark Beavers, Eastland H.S.

Might as well have ourselves a classic on opening day!

This contest featured a matchup between two much ballyhooed 11 year-old pitchers making their CCJBL debuts, and they did not disappoint! Through six innings there was no score and only one hit between the teams and Mount Carroll's Ricky Vaughn and the Beavers Amos Rusie! obviously both pitchers have dominating stuff and an exciting future in the league! The game remained scoreless until the top of the ninth when the Hawks catcher Ira Thomas laced a scorching single to score two runs off of reliever David Price. But the Beavers fired back with two runs off hurler Charles Radbourn on three singles and a costly Frankie Baker error.

Price gave up a run with a bases loaded walk in the tenth to Baker. Again, Lanark battled back in their half of the inning when Nicholas Simpson doubled to lead it off and Frank Chance drove him home one out later to deadlock the score at 3 apiece. Price retired the Hawks in order in the top of the eleventh. In the bottom half little Beavers shortstop Mark Ellis cranked a walk-off tater off of Josh Smith to win the game!

Stunning Handel Park in Chadwick was the scene of a wonderful pitchers duel between The Streaks Steve Karsay and Savanna's Claude Jonnard. Karsay went five innings allowing just five baserunners and no opponents crossing the dish. Claude lasted 4 1/3 one hit innings before being relieved by Robin Roberts. The Indians finally broke through in the top of the 8th when Jesse Haines walked Willie Mays Hayes to lead off the inning, the Hayes was driven in by a Bret Boone sacrifice flyout. Mount Carroll Hawks vs. Shannon Eagles, Lions Park

Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn hurls a gem! The Hawks hurler allows only a single baserunner and went the distance for the win. Those two runs proved to be the only scored by either team.
