Week 4 CCJBL, 2018

This week in CCJBL Baseball!!!

Monday, June 18

Chadwick Silver Streaks @ Savanna Indians, Old Mill Park

The Streaks scored in the opening frame on a solo smash by phenom Matthew Williams but Willie Hayes answered with a homer of his own in the third off of Chadwick ace Jared Weaver. In the bottom of the fifth The Indians scored a pair against Weaver on a home run by Brad Ausmus and a run-scoring triple by Hayes.

Savanna hurler Robin Roberts had not given up a hit since that first inning homer but things quickly fell apart for him in the sixth. Michael Kelly singled and stole second, then scored on a game-tying two run dinger by lanky infielder Jose Lind. Roberts was lifted in favor of Claude Jonnard after giving up a single to Williams. Jonnard got Reggie Sanders to strike out but then gave up another Chadwick homer, this time off the bat of John Berardino.

Jesse Haines had a little trouble in the bottom of the sixth but eventually finished off the Indians.

Shannon hurler Satchel Paige was touched up for three tallies in the third,  however. Shannon added a run to their lead in the fourth and took a 5-3 advantage into the bottom of the sixth. But Gerald Walker tied the game with a two-run shot against Kenny DeNunez and on to extra innings they went!

The score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the eighth. With DeNunez still on the bump Walker reached on a double with two outs and then scored the winning run on a walk-off by Willie Wells!

Week 3 CCJBL, 2018

This week in CCJBL Baseball!!!

Monday June 11

Mt. Carroll Hawks @ Milledgeville Missiles, Milledgeville H.S.

The Hawks got two runs on the board immediately when Frank "Home Run" Baker lived up to his nickname with a two run blast off of Missiles hurler Fernando Valenzuela in the top of the first. Joey Votto got one of those back in the bottom half of the frame with a solo shot.

Another solo bomb from Milledgeville's Timothy Federowicz in the third tied it up and the scrappy Missiles took a one run lead later that inning on a Votto run scoring single. Valenzuela then helped his own cause by plating two with a 4th inning triple for a 5-2 lead!

The Hawks weren't finished yet, however. Willie Wells chased Fernando from the contest with a fifth inning dinger. Milledgeville small-balled their way to a 6-3 advantage in the bottom half of the same inning. Robert Johnson, on in relief of Valenzuela, gave up two runs in the sixth when Baker managed a second collosal clout, but managed to hang on for the save.

Shannon Eagles @ Chadwick Silver Streaks, Handel Park

Picturesque Handel Park was the scene of an old fashioned pitchers duel! Chadwick's Jared Weaver and Shannon's Satchel Paige each baffled their opponents through five innings. Weaver entered the top of the sixth having allowed no hits! He mowed down the Eagles batsmen to finish the half inning with the no-no intact. But the score was still tied. Unfortunately, Paige had been lifted for a pinch hitter and was relieved in the bottom half by Kenny DeNunez, who retired the first two he faced. Mighty youngster Matthew Williams strode to the plate with the game and Weaver's no hitter on the line and delivered a walk-off home run!

Savanna Indians @ Shannon Eagles, Lions Park

An interesting contest took place at Lions Park! Shannon seemed to have this one under control leading 4-2 entering the sixth inning. But Richie Zisk tied things up with a two-run moonshot off of Satchel Paige and the two teams were off to extra innings!

Things remained knotted at four apiece until the top of the 9th when Shannon ran out of eligible pitchers and outfielder Monte Irvin was forced to rake the mound. The Eagles hitters took advantage of poor Monte, scoring twice on doubles by Brad Ausmus and Robin Roberts. Roberts then slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning in his sixth inning of scoreless relief!

Milledgeville had the final say in the bottom of the sixth against Steve Karsay. Henderson walked to lead the inning off and quickly stole second. Max Carey tripled him home to tie the game and soon scored on a Joey Votto sacrifice fly.

Week 2 CCJBL, 2018

 This week in CCJBL Baseball!!!

 Monday June 4

Mt. Carroll Hawks @ Savanna Indians, Old Mill Park

The Hawks jumped all over Indians hurler Robin Roberts on this fine Monday evening at Old Mill Park. A Johnny Olerud single coupled with a David Freese error put runers on 1st and 2nd with one out in the games opening frame. Frankie "Home Run" Baker came through with a two-run triple to get Mt. Carroll on the board. Gene Robertson promptly singled Baker home to stake the away team to a quick 3-0 lead. The Hawks batsmen added to their cushion in the third when Baker struck again, singling home Michael Trout.  The four runs were more than enough for Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn. Vaughn tossed serious heat the entire game, going the distance and shutting out the overmatched Indians.

Final Score: Mt. Carroll 4, Savanna 0

Milledgeville Missiles @ Shannon Eagles, Lions Park

A pitchers duel at Lions Park between two of the most charismatic young hurlers in the league!

The Missiles Fernando Valenzuela and Shannon's Kenny DeNunez went toe to toe, pitch for pitch in this battle. Milledgeville struck first when a Shawon Dunston error allowed speedster Rickey Henderson to reach base to start the game. Henderson was his usual daring self on the basepaths, swiping second AND third, then scored on a Joey Votto single. Dunston made up for his miscue with a solo dinger in the bottom half of the second inning to tie things up. DeNunez and Fernando puts up zeroes the rest of the way until the bottom of the sixth when the Eagles star shortstop struck again, crushing a second home run off of Valenzuela to walk it off!

Lanark Beavers @ Chadwick Silver Streaks, Handel Park

The Streaks jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Lanark starter Amos Rusie in the bottom of the first on a Reggie Sanders RBI single and Garrett Kness sacrifice fly. But single tallies in the fourth and fifth (one a solo shot by Enos Slaughter) off of Chadwick ace Jered Weaver tied thing up. The score remained the same until the top of the 9th inning when run scoring base hits by Moises Alou and Mark Ellis staked the road squad to a 4-2 lead.

But Chadwick would not roll over. Batting against reliever David Price, working in his fifth inning in relief of Rusie. A lead off  single by Luis Gonzales got things off on the right foot and Kness reached on a costly error by outfielder Cliff Mapes. An Albert Almora ground out plated one run. Then Chadwick's John Berardino went down swinging for the second out of the inning, giving the Beavers hope Price might wriggle out of the jam. Price walked Mark McLemore to put men on 1st and 2nd. The walk was likely semi-intentional because light hitting Stevie Karsay was due up. But Karsay shocked the home crowd roping a two run double off of the Handel Park chain link to win the game!!!

Shannon Eagles @ Lanark Beavers, Eastland H.S.

The Beavers got off to a good start in this rivalry game, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the opening frame on an RBI single by Enos "Country" Slaughter. Unfortunately for the Lanark baseball faithful, that was all the scoring the home squad would do off of "Satchell" Paige and Co. Shannon plated three on a home run blast by Joyner White in the third and two more in the fifth on a single by Shawon Dunston.

The Missiles Bobby Johnson got roughed up in this one. Willie Mays Hayes reached on an error to begin the top of the first and it just got worse from there on. "Pee Wee" Reese drove Hayes home with a double. Three batters later Brock Holt singled home Reese. Then Collin Cowgill and Brad Ausmus hit back-to-back home runs and MIlledgeville was down 5-0 before they even had a chance to swing the bats. Claude Jonnard and Robin Roberts wouldn't let them get off of the deck, either, as the Savanna pair allowed just one run in the contest.

A two run double by Garrett Kness in the first got things started for the visiting Streaks against crafty hurler Charles Radbourn. A pair of RBI singles by Radbourn (in the third) and Gerald Walker (in the fourth) knotted the score at two apiece. In the top of the fifth, however, Chadwick's Reggie Sanders had the last word, cranking a Radbourn curveball high into the sky past the right-center fence. Jered Weaver shut the door on the Streaks with two scoreless to nab himself a save.

 THIS WEEK IN CCJBL BASEBALL!!!

Hey! We are back for another exciting season of Carroll County baseball! Let's get started!

Monday, May 28

Milledgeville Missiles vs. Chadwick Silver Streaks, Handel Park

A great pitching matchup between the Missiles Fernando Valenzuela and The Streaks ace Jered Weaver. Chadwick's Matt Williams introduced himself to the league with a two-run dinger in his first ever at bat to stake Weaver to an early lead from then on it was basically pitching domination. no runs were scored until Weaver ran into trouble in the top of the sixth and final frame. Scrappy little Tanner Boyle earned a free pass to lead off the frame and then Rickey Henderson doubled to put runners on second and third with one gone. Max Carey then tied the game with a single that plated both Boyle and Henderson. Joey Votto single to put boys on the corners but Weaver rallied to retire Freddie Lindstrom and Timothy Federowicz and end the threat.

Robbie Johnson took over on the bump for Milledgeville in the bottom of the sixth Ed Robinson reached on a sharp liner with one out. After Albert Almora flew out to deep center, catcher Brady Kness launched a Johnson fastball into an outfield gap to score Robinson and win the game in a walk-off!

Mount Carroll Hawks vs. Lanark Beavers, Eastland H.S.

Might as well have ourselves a classic on opening day!

This contest featured a matchup between two much ballyhooed 11 year-old pitchers making their CCJBL debuts, and they did not disappoint! Through six innings there was no score and only one hit between the teams and Mount Carroll's Ricky Vaughn and the Beavers Amos Rusie! obviously both pitchers have dominating stuff and an exciting future in the league! The game remained scoreless until the top of the ninth when the Hawks catcher Ira Thomas laced a scorching single to score two runs off of reliever David Price. But the Beavers fired back with two runs off hurler Charles Radbourn on three singles and a costly Frankie Baker error.

Price gave up a run with a bases loaded walk in the tenth to Baker. Again, Lanark battled back in their half of the inning when Nicholas Simpson doubled to lead it off and Frank Chance drove him home one out later to deadlock the score at 3 apiece. Price retired the Hawks in order in the top of the eleventh. In the bottom half little Beavers shortstop Mark Ellis cranked a walk-off tater off of Josh Smith to win the game!

Stunning Handel Park in Chadwick was the scene of a wonderful pitchers duel between The Streaks Steve Karsay and Savanna's Claude Jonnard. Karsay went five innings allowing just five baserunners and no opponents crossing the dish. Claude lasted 4 1/3 one hit innings before being relieved by Robin Roberts. The Indians finally broke through in the top of the 8th when Jesse Haines walked Willie Mays Hayes to lead off the inning, the Hayes was driven in by a Bret Boone sacrifice flyout. Lanark immediately answered in the bottom half off Bobby Johnson. Four singles did the damage, with Moises Alou and Mark Ellis getting an RBI apiece. Frankie Chance and Alou both doubled in the third to extend the Beavers lead. The Missiles could not manage to push another runner across home the rest of the contest despite having 8 hits.
