Willie Wells carried his tournament championship game heroics over to the all-star game. Wells won the game MVP award, going 3-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI! Roy Hobbs went deep for the Red squad as they triumphed easily 4-0. Eddie Cicotte got the win hurling three scoreless innings.

Prior to the game the league awards were given out. Neither were a big surprise to anybody. Shannon's Roy Hobbs won league MVP and the Tully McAuliffe
Award also went to an Eagle, Eddie Cicotte. Hobbs had the best power season in CCJBL history, slugging 7 home runs in eleven games. He hit for a .484 average, scored ten runs, and knocked in eleven. Cicotte had perhaps the most dominant pitching performance the league has seen. He went 5-1 with a 0.79 ERA. In 34 1/3 innings he gave up just 24 hits and 3 walks. Cicotte completed four of his six starts, two of them shutouts.

Not bad for two first year players! It will be hard to top those statistics next season!

2019 CCJBL Tournament

Tournament time is here again, CCJBL fans!!! Let's get to the recaps of all the great action!

July 1, 2019

#3 Lanark Beavers vs #6 Savanna Indians, Eastland H.S.

Savanna looked primed to pull off an early upset when they took a 2-0 lead in the first on an Aaron Boone two-run single. But the Beavers answered back in the second inning when Eric McNair knocked a Robin Roberts fastball over the fence to tie the game!

Things remained deadlocked into the fifth. Savanna had sent reliever Claude Jonnard to the bump and with one out Frankie Chance singled and quickly swiped second base. Moises Alou lined a clutch single into left. Chance scored for a 3-2 Lanark lead.

Meanwhile Amos Rusie was cruising after giving up those two first inning runs. He allowed one walk to the Indians Boone in the top of the sixth but that was all he would allow. He got the victory with a complete game!

#5 Milledgeville Missiles vs #1 Shannon Eagles, Lions Park

Three innings went by with no score in this contest. The Missiles Todd Worrell was matching Shannon's Eddie Cicotte strike for strike. Max Carey, who spearheaded Milledgeville's opening round victory, led off the fourth with a single against Cicotte. He stole second against the cannon arm of Gary Carter. Then with one out he scored on a Cody Bellinger single.

That was all the support Worrell would require. The Missiles hurler has had an up-and-down season but he dominated the heavily favored Eagles on this day, throwing a complete game shutout. He allowed just two hits and struck out seven.

Ladies and gentleman, we have a Cinderella in the league championship game!

#5 Milledgeville Missiles vs #2 Mt. Carroll Hawks, Handel Park

Beautiful Handel Park was, as always, the scene for the CCJBL league championship game! Who would prevail? The underdog Missiles? They had shut out three of their last four opponents! Or the favored Hawks, who bludgeoned Lanark in the semi-finals?

To make a long story short.... the Hawks. Milledgeville's pitching collapsed after two weeks of dominating performances. Willie Wells led the bottom of the first off with a home run for a 1-0 lead. Then Mt. Carroll's bats exploded in the third. They scored nine times against Todd Worrell and Bobby Johnson, highlighted by another long dinger by Wells, a two-run shot this time.

Meanwhile Ricky Vaughn and Don Drysdale were rolling over the Missiles offense. They allowed just two hits and no runs in a combined shutout. Milledgeville's unlikely run to the tourney championship fell far short in the finale. Congrats to the Hawks!!!

Week 5 CCJBL, 2019

This week in CCJBL baseball!!!

June 24, 2019

Savanna Indians @ Chadwick Silver Streaks, Handel Park

Both teams were held scoreless by the opposing hurler until the bottom of the third when red hot Johnny Berardino drove in a run with a double in the gap. However, the visiting Indians answered with authority in the fourth with a pair of two-run singles courtesy of Cliff Floyd and pitcher Claude Jonnard.

Chadwick battled back against Jonnard in the bottom of the frame when King Kelly drove in a pair of runs with two outs. But Kelly committed a very costly error in right that allowed a Savanna insurance run to score in the fifth and seal the deal for the visiting Indians.

Mt. Carroll Hawks @ Shannon Eagles, Lions Park

Shannon's Lions Park was the stage for this epic battle for first place!

Unfortunately for the visiting Hawks this one went badly from the start. Don Drysdale gave up a solo dinger to Roy Hobbs in the first and another run in the second on a Chone Figgins single. After Hobbs again homered (he is looking like the favorite for league MVP at this point) in the third and Gary Carter doubled, young Don was done for the evening. Reliever Josh Smith immediately gave up a single for a 4-0 Eagles lead. Another run-scoring single later in the inning pretty much sealed the game for Shannon.

Meanwhile Eddie Cicotte continued to add to what is looking like one of the great pitching seasons in CCJBL history. He hurled four innings of shutout, one hit ball before being removed for Michael Lorenzen. Lorenzen finished off the shutout victory and Shannon took control of first place from the slumping Hawks, who have now lost three of their last four after a 5-0 start.

Final score: Shannon 5, Mt. Carroll 0

Mt. Carroll Hawks @  Savanna Indians, Old Mill Park

Things were looking great for Mt. Carroll in the first inning. The first two batters of the game singled against Savanna starter Robin Roberts. Then Reginald Jackson drilled a three-run homer over the right field fence!

Unfortunately they never scored again. The Indians tallied four runs off of Ricky Vaughn in the fourth inning and held on the rest of the way for the narrow victory, just their third off the season. Mt. Carroll sunk to 6-4 after a torrid 5-0 start.

Final score: Savanna 4- Mt. Carroll 3

Milledgeville Missiles @ Shannon Eagles, Lions Park

Shannon kept their foot on the peddle in their quest for the one seed in the CCJBL tourney. After Milledgeville struck first with a run in the first the Shannon bats exploded for six in the third inning. Billy Hamilton contributed a three-run jack in the inning while Roy Hobbs homered later in the frame. Hobbs would homer yet again later in the game, giving him four taters this week alone and an astounding seven for the regular season! The kid is a natural!

The Missiles scored twice in the sixth thanks to a two-run shot from Tanner Boyle off of reliever Michael Lorenzen but it wasn't nearly enough. They fell to 3-7 for the campaign while Shannon improved to 8-2,  securing the regular season title.

Final score: Shannon 7, Milledgeville 3

Lanark Beavers @ Chadwick Silver Streaks, Handel Park

A pair of fielding errors victimized Chadwick's Chad Ogea in the first as Lanark scored three runs. Matt Williams got two of those runs back when he slammed a two-run shot off of Amos Rusie in the bottom of the inning.

Rusie was dominant after the first inning, however. He allowed only one base runner the rest of the contest on his way to the complete game victory. Both teams end the regular season slate with 5-5 records.

Week 4 CCJBL, 2019

This week in CCJBL baseball!!!

June 17, 2019

Chadwick Silver Streaks @ Shannon Eagles, Lions Park

The home Eagles struck first in the opening frame. Billy Hamilton singled off Jesse Haines, stole second, and then scored on a two-out single from catcher Gary Carter. But the Streaks answered when red hot Johnny Berardino doubled with one gone in the top of the second and was driven home by Lloyd McClendon.

Shannon ace hurler Eddie Cicotte helped his cause by driving in a run in the second to give his squad a 2-1 lead. A crucial error in the fourth by Chadwick's Matt Williams
opened the door to three unearned runs. Phenom Roy Hobbs delivered the crucial blow when he plated two runs with a line drive single.

Lanark Beavers @ Savanna Indians, Old Mill Park

A good old-fashioned pitchers duel took place at Old Mill Park! After four innings neither team had scored off of Savanna's Robin Roberts and Lanark's Billy Lee.

That all changed in the top of the 5th. Ricky Ankiel led off against Roberts with a triple and the next batter, Frank Chance, drilled one over the fence for a two-run homer! That proved to be the extent of the scoring as Lee, Dallas Keuchel, and Amos Rusie combined to shut the Indians out.

Final score: Lanark 2, Savanna 0

Milledgeville Missiles @ Mt. Carroll Hawks, Point Rock Park

Milledgeville drew first blood on run-scoring singles by Joey Votto and Freddie Lindstrom in the first. Cody Bellinger added to that lead with a solo shot in the third off of Hawks starter Josh Smith.

Missiles hurler Todd Worrell was cruising with a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth. A single and a pair of free passes loaded the bases with just one out but Worrell notched his seventh strikeout and was one out away from victory when Mt. Carroll relief pitcher Don Drysdale hammered a ball over the fence for a walk-off, grand slam!

Final score: Mt. Carroll 4, Milledgeville 3

After giving up a run in the first, the Streaks exploded in the bottom of the inning for four runs on home runs by Matthew Williams, Jody Wood, and Johnny Berardino!

Milledgeville scrapped back into this game with a run in the second and two in the third off of starter Chad Ogea. Chadwick broke the 4-4 deadlock when King Kelly homered in the fifth. Ryan Tepera pitched a perfect 6th to get the save.

Shannon Eagles @ Savanna Indians, Old Mill Park

Shannon broke through for four runs in the second inning against Indians starter Claude Jonnard. Pitcher Mike Harkey drove in two with a single and Jonnard was hurt by a costly Willie May Hayes error in center.

Harkey threw four scoreless innings and Michael Lorenzen closed out the game for the Eagles, though he did give up a two-run homer to PeeWee Reese.

Shannon's victory combined with Mt. Carroll's loss put the two teams in a tie for the top spot in the CCJBL going into the leagues final week.

Week 3 CCJBL, 2019

This week in CCJBL Baseball!!!

June 10, 2019

Savanna Indians@ Mt. Carroll Hawks, Point Rock Park

This contest went Mt. Carroll's way almost immediately. The Hawks Reggie Jackson continues to impress, He definitely made an impression on Savanna hurler Robin Roberts when he cracked a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning.

Mt. Carroll added five more in the third, highlighted by Don Drysdale knocking in three with a dinger of his own. Roberts' defense did him no favors in this game, committing five errors during his three innings of work.

Drysdale went the distance for his first CCJBL win and shutout!

Final score: Mt. Carroll 8, Savanna 0

Shannon Eagles @ Milledgeville Missiles, Milledgeville H.S.

This had all the makings of a pitchers duel between Milledgeville's Bobby Johnson and the Eagles ace hurler Eddie Cicotte. Shannon broke a scoreless tie in the third when Cicotte helped his own cause with a run-scoring triple and was driven home later in the frame by Shawon Dunston.

Davey Boswell relieved Johnson in the fourth but quickly gave up three runs on four consecutive singles. The resulting five run cushion was more than enough for Cicotte. The freshman phenom threw his second complete game shutout of the young season.

A little extracurricular excitement occurred in the bottom of the third when the Missiles Tanner Boyle was thrown out at home attempting to score from second on a single. Tanner took exception to something and lost his mind, trying to take on the entire Shannon squad. Order was eventually restored and Boyle was allowed to stay in the game. Kid has a temper!

Lanark Beavers @ Shannon Eagles, Lions Park

Eagles phenom Roy Hobbs homered off of Amos Rusie to stake Shannon to an early lead in the first. I guess he was right when he insisted on using a homemade wooden bat this season!

Neither team scored again until the fifth when Lanark's Eddie Delahanty knocked home Rusie to tie things up, much to the delight of his four brothers watching in the crowd. The Beavers then took the lead in the top of the sixth when Rick Ankiel launched a Mike Harkey curve into outer space!

Lanark hard luck reliever Billy Lee took the hill to try for the save in the bottom of the sixth but immediately got into trouble. Pete Fox led off with a single and Billy Hamilton doubled to put men on second and third. Shawon Dunston promptly knocked both runners home with a walk-off double!

Milledgeville Missiles @ Savanna Indians, Old Mill Park

The Indians scored single tallies off of Todd Worrell in the third and fourth. The Missiles struck back to tie the game in the fourth on solo shots by Willie Hayes and Cody Bellinger.

Cecil Fielder gave Savanna the lead again the fifth with a run-scoring double but Milledgeville fired back again in the sixth against Robin Roberts, scoring three times. The major damage came from a second dinger from Cody Bellinger, this time a
two-run shot. Bobby Johnson came on in relief of Worrell to notch the save.

Mt. Carroll Hawks @ Chadwick Silver Streaks, Handel Park

Chadwick drew first blood against Ricky Vaughn after King Kelly walked, stole second base, and was driven home by Eric Davis. A leadoff walk hurt Vaughn again in the fourth when Davis scored on a Luis Gonzales base hit.

Things got dicey for the Streaks in the sixth, however. Jesse Haines took the hill with a 2-0 lead looking for a complete game shutout but walked Dale Murphy to lead off the inning and allowed a single to Hawks pitcher Josh Smith. Ryan Tepera came on in relief and with two outs surrendered a double to Ian Thomas that cut the lead to one. However, Tepera escaped to earn the save when he struck out Delino DeShields to end the contest and hand the Hawks their first loss of the season.

Week 2, 2019 CCJBL

This week in CCJBL Baseball!!!

June 3, 2019

Chadwick Silver Streaks @ Milledgeville Missiles, Milledgeville High School

Matt Williams wasted no time getting Chadwick on the scoreboard when he slammed a solo shot off of Todd Worrell in the opening frame. The Streaks scored again in the second on a John Berardino base knock.

Worrell and reliever Davey Boswell held the Streaks lineup in check after that and the Missiles evened the score with two in the bottom of the fifth. The score remained deadlocked until the top of the eighth when Boswell and Bobby Johnson allowed a pair of tallies on an Eric Davis single and a Williams sacrifice fly.

But the scrappy Missiles were not dead  yet! Joey Votto led off the bottom of the 8th with a solo shot against Chad Ogea to cut the score to 4-3. Then with two outs Timmy Federowicz doubled to put the tying run in scoring position. Freddy Lindstrom reached on an infield single to put runners on first and third. But Ogea managed to escape the jam, however, inducing a harmless pop up to short from Harry Craft.

On a side note, I learned today that Johnny Berardino is also a very accomplished actor when he is not playing ball! What a talented young man!

Lanark Beavers @ Mt. Carroll Hawks, Point Rock Park

Chucky Knoblauch got the party started on the games first delivery from the Hawks Josh Smith, parking one into the stream beyond the center field fence! Mt. Carroll answered back immediately with three in their half of the first, highlighted by a two-run dinger by the powerful youngster Reggie Jackson!

The home squad pushed a run across the plate in the third off of starter Amos Rusie and another in the fourth when Willie Wells launched a tater against Dallas Keuchel. They had a seemingly comfortable 5-1 lead.

But the Beavers fought back. Reigning MVP Moises Alou doubled home a run and then scored on a Rick Ankiel single in the fifth. Frank Chance then plated Eric McNair with another single in the sixth against Ricky Vaughn. The Hawks ace was in big trouble with the tying run on third and the winning on first and only one out! But he dug deep and retired the next two batters to secure the victory!

Savanna Indians @ Shannon Eagles, Lions Park

Pitching ruled the day at Lions Park! The Eagles Eddie Cicotte and Savanna's Robin Roberts each went six strong innings allowing only one run each. Claude Jonnard took over for Roberts and Michael Lorenzen for Cicotte. Both continued to shut down their opponents sticks in extras until the bottom of the ninth. Jonnard gave up a leadoff single to speedster Billy Hamilton, who promptly and predictably stole second base. It looked like Claude might escape the inning after striking out Shawon Dunston and the very dangerous Roy Hobbs. But Gary "Kid" Carter drove a two out single into left to score Hamilton and give Shannon a walk-off victory!

Chadwick Silver Streaks @ Savanna Indians, Old Mill Park

Not a great day to be a pitcher at scenic Old Mill Park. The Streaks scored twice off of Frankie Viola in the opening frame. Savanna quickly evened the score with two runs of their own versus Chad Ogea, highlighted by a Willie Hayes homer.

Viola struggled to get outs in the second, also. Matt Williams dealt the big blow with a three run dinger. Young Matt is making a strong early MVP case!

It looked like a potential blowout by the Chadwickians but the Indians scratched back with a run in the third on a Brad Ausmus double and two more in the fifth against Ryan Tepera to tie the contest at five.

The score remained knotted until the top of the eighth. Savanna unfortunately ran out of eligible pitchers after seven innings. Robin Roberts had thrown six innings in the first game of the week and 5th, 6th, and 7th on this one, reaching his maximum of nine for the week. Viola and Claude Jonnard had already been used earlier in the game leaving position player Cliff Floyd as the hurler on the mound for the eighth. Predictably Chadwick took advantage of his inexperience scoring twice on doubles by Luis Gonzalez and King Kelly. Jesse Haines hurled a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth to secure the victory for the Streaks.

Lanark Beavers @ Milledgeville Missiles, Milledgeville H.S.

Milledgeville jumped out to an early lead against Lanark starter Billy Lee when Max Carey and Martin Dihigo went back-to-back to lead off the bottom of the first! Beavers slugger Moises Alou tied things up with a two-run double in the third off of a Billy Johnson curve. Cliff Mapes then drove Alou home against reliever Todd Worrell for a 3-2 Lanark lead.

Missile rightfielder Cody Bellinger tied things up again with a solo shot off of Lee in the bottom of the third frame. But Lanark again grabbed the lead in the fourth when Joe Tinker took Worrell deep!

Tinker's tater proved to be the deciding blow. Lanark's Amos Rusie threw three scoreless innings in relief of Lee to cement the victory for the Beavers.

Shannon Eagles @ Mt. Carroll Hawks, Point Rock Park

This one was all about Hawks ace hurler Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn! He was anything but wild as he tossed a complete game shutout, spreading around seven singles and striking out three Hawks!

His battery mate Ian Thomas not only called a great game for Vaughn, he also knocked in two of Mt. Carroll's four runs. Frank Baker accounted for the other two RBI with a fourth inning triple.

Final score: Mt. Carroll 4, Shannon 0
