It's that time of year again CCJBL fans! Tournament action is on the way! It's win or go home!
#6 Savanna Indians @ #3 Shannon Eagles, Lions Park, 7/2/18
After sweeping the regular season and tournament titles in 2017, the Indians fell on tough times. They had to replace their entire pitching staff and finished last this season with a 3-7 record. Their team batting average is well under. 200 and their E.R.A. is north of 6. They travel to take on the Eagles at Shannon's Lions Park (first round games take place at the higher seed's home diamond). Shannon finished in a four way tie for 2nd. They feature two-way CCJBL legend Kenny DeNunez and a star 11-year-old shortstop, Shawon Dunston.
Not surprisingly, this game went the way of Shannon pretty much immediately. Claude Jonnard gave up three in the first, the big blow being a two-run blast off the bat of Billy Johnson. Shannon scored three more in the second as well. This inning it was Joyner White delivering a two-run dinger.
Savanna did get a couple runs back in the top of the fourth when catcher Brad Ausmus cranked a two-run shot of his own, but the momentum was short lived. Shannon scored twice in their half of the fourth and twice again in the fifth to clinch their victory and end the Indians season.
Final score: Shannon 10, Savanna 2

#5 Milledgeville Missiles @ #4 Lanark Beavers, Eastland H S., 7/2/18
Both the Missiles and the Beavers ended the regular season with 5-5 records. By virtue of tiebreakers, Lanark gets the home game as the four seed.
Offensively the Missiles are led by base-stealing leadoff man Rickey Henderson, swift outfielder Max Carey, and a pair of hitters sporting averages over .400, Joey Votto and Tim Federowicz. Federowicz is one of the best ten-year-olds in league history!
Their pitching staff is anchored by the incredible Fernando Valenzuela, who got the victory in every one of Milledgeville's five regular season victories! Todd Worrell also is dynamic on the bump and boasts a sub-2 E.R.A.
The pitching for the Beavers is nothing to take lightly, either. Amos Rusie, Charlie Finley, and David Price combine for an E.R.A. under three. Mark Ellis, Frank Chance, and slugger Moises Alou pace the potent Lanark offense.
This contest did not disappoint! Plenty of drama to be had!
Valenzuela proved he is human after all, being roughed up in the second. Lanark scored three times on four hits, the big blow being a Chance two-run single. In the top of the fourth, however, Federowicz struck a clutch home run that scored three and tied the game!
Each squad plated a single run in the fifth and the scoring stopped. The contest remained even at four apiece all the way until the bottom of the tenth when the first batter Mark Ellis hit a dramatic walk-off homer against Worrell to give the Beavers the victory!

#3 Shannon Eagles @ #2 Chadwick Silver Streaks, Handel Park, 7/5/18
The remaining games of the tournament (and the All Star game) will be played at the holy grail of diamonds, Chadwick's Handel Park. In exchange for these privileges every year, Chadwick has agreed it cannot be the #1 seed in the CCJBL tournament. That is why despite being two games ahead in the regular season standings they are the #2 seed, though they are still the home team in this contest against #3 Shannon. The Eagles trounced Savanna in their first round game earlier this week.
Chadwick's offense was a bit sporadic this season but power hitters Matthew Williams and Reggie Sanders each slugged 3 dingers in regular season play. Michael "King" Kelly also shined with a .333 average and 7 stolen bases. The pitching staff was solid overall and was led by CCJBL legendary hurler Jared Weaver.
This was a tight and tense battle from the first pitch! Weaver left Eagles runners stranded at first and third in the first inning. Shannon starter Larry French did the same in the bottom of the second. Then French helped his own cause by getting his only hit of the season to leadoff the third. A home run off a Weaver breaking ball!
Things were looking bleak for the regular season champ Silver Streaks as they trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth. Kelly smoked a French fastball out of the park with one out, however. Kenny DeNunez replaced French on the hill with the game now tied. But Reggie Sanders immediately greeted him with another home run to give Chadwick a 2-1 lead!
Weaver had been lifted for a pinch hitter so Stevie Karsay came in to try to get the save in the sixth. Shannon's Joyner White reached on a Jose Lind throwing error with one out. The next batter Rogers Hornsby was walked by Karsay, putting the tying and go- ahead runs on. Shawon Dunston ripped a liner that Lind snagged for the second out and Karsay struck out Monte Irvin to end the game!
Final Score: Chadwick 2, Shannon 1

#4 Lanark Beavers vs. #1 Mt. Carroll Hawks, Handel Park, 7/5/18
The Hawks sported a balanced attack led by Mookie Betts, John Olerud, Willie Wells, and Ira Thomas. 2017 all star Michael Trout had only four hits the entire regular season but made them count with 3 homers and 8 RBI's. On the hill they were led by Rickey "Wild Thing" Vaughn's 3 victories. 10-year-old phenom Josh Smith also was impressive with a 3.29 E.R.A. In this second round game they took on Lanark, who squeaked by the Milledgeville Missiles in ten innings earlier this week.
The Hawks took control early with four runs off of David Price and Chuck Finley. Frank Baker led the Mt. Carroll charge with a two run single in the third. With Rickey Vaughn on the hill things looked fantastic for the Hawks!
Moises Alou changed everything with one powerful swing. Facing Vaughn with two on in the top of the fourth, he annihilated a baseball onto the basketball court past Handel Park's left/center fence. The Hawks still held a shaky 4-3 lead but that slim margin was erased when Lanark scored again the next inning on a Edward Delahanty single that plated Finley with the tying run.
Neither team could score the rest of the regulation six innings, though Mt. Carroll did strand a runner on third in the bottom of the sixth. Charles Radbourn surrendered a run-scoring double to Delahanty in the seventh that proved to be the winning run when Amos Rusie shut down the Hawks in the bottom of the frame. Lanark survives extra innings again to advance to the championship game!

#4 Lanark Beavers @ #2 Chadwick Silver Streaks, Handel Park, 7/7/18
The championship of the CCJBL is set. Lanark, who squeaked out two extra innings tourney games to get here, versus the regular season champs Chadwick, playing on their home grass in Handel Park! Let's get to the action!
The Beavers came ready to play and jumped all over the Chadwick hurlers right off the bat. Stevie Karsay recorded only one out before being relieved of his pitching duties for the day. By that time Lanark scored three times and staked themselves to a lead they would never come close to relinquishing. Finley helped his pitching cause with a second inning home run off Streaks reliever Jared Weaver to increase the advantage to four runs.
Meanwhile a mound combination of Finley, Amos Rusie, and David Price allowed the Chadwick lineup nary a hit through five frames. In the top of the sixth the Beavers put the nails in the Silver Streaks coffins by scoring three more times for a 7-0 lead. Chadwick did break up the no-hitter and score three times in the bottom of the inning but it was far too little and far too late. Lanark wins the CCJBL Tournament Championship game in very dominating fashion!
